Cadillac XTS-V a No Go

Quote:
Amidst all that’s unique about the Cadillac XTS, the powertrain stands out as a less-than-original feature.

At launch the new flagship of the Cadillac brand is available exclusively with a direct injection 3.6-liter V6 engine making 304 hp and 364 lb-ft of torque. While sufficient, it’s notably different than the powerplant found in the original XTS concept which featured a plug-in hybrid system mated to that same V6 to deliver a more potent 350 hp.

So will we see a high performance V version of the XTS? Don’t count on it says Cadillac Communications Manager David Caldwell. “We either do a V version or a Platinum version of each car,” he said while sitting in the spacious and leather filled rear seat of an XTS Platinum model during a drive event in Hollywood this week – an obvious suggestion that no V is planned.

Cars like the CTS get a V variant and boast 556 hp and a 3.9 second 0-60 time while luxury model models like the Escalade have a Platinum edition. The XTS, understandably fits into the luxury lineup.

“I don’t see us doing any track days with the XTS,” Caldwell jokes.

As for whether or not we’ll see a hybrid version, either as a more fuel-economy focused model or as a power adder, that seems unlikely too says Caldwell. Instead, he suggests that if Cadillac does decide to offer a more powerful version of its new flagship sedan, they’ll head in a different direction.

Exactly what that new direction would bring he wouldn’t elaborate, though GM is rumored to be working on a twin-turbo V6 to rival Ford’s EcoBoost, which should deliver more thrust than Ford’s engine, which is currently rated at 365 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque.
