sidewall roll

CTS-V, 255/40r/18 Michlins Pilot Sport. When slowly backing up at a sharp turn, sidewall rolls to a point where it suddenly pops and returns to its correct position. When it pops there is a loud thud that is felt back through the steering wheel. Is this normal, if not what is the correction?

No, this is not normal. The popping and thud that you are feeling is likely caused by a damaged tire. You may need to have the tire inspected by a professional to determine if it needs to be replaced. Additionally, you may want to check your vehicle's alignment to make sure that it is not contributing to the issue.
