: Custom intake
JJHomer83 10-06-2003, 11:54 AM Good day all.
I own a 92 Eldorado with the 4.9L basically bone stock.
I was at a car show this weekend and say an older Eldo. with the 4.9L and the hood was up. When i looked under the hood i saw a custom made air intake. There was no one to ask quesions to that was near the car. Does anyone know where to start on how to make one for this motor and one that would work effectively in this car. Or is there one that is already made for my car/motor. I appriciate your time and input.
thanks guys

What type of intake are we talking about here? like a cold air intake or a short ram intake?
JJHomer83 10-07-2003, 06:30 AM I don't know what intake to put on. I am new to the "new" car modding. I am used to modding my 70 chevelle with a 400ci. Does anyone have any recommendations on which to use. What is easier, what has the bigger hp gain, what is more cost effective? Any help would be much apprciatried

Well if I was you since you don't have a forced induction equipment ( turbo or super charger) you can most likely get greater gains from a short ram intake.. although if done right the cold air intake will do the same job.. but look nicer :)
As far as cost effective.. it will be most likely the short ram.. as far as bigger hp gains.. it really depends on the design.. but both can actually greatly increase the power on a N/A car.
I will try to dig up some vendors of our other forums and see what is available for you car ;)

This is the front end of a 92 eldo. It has the 4.9L engine in it. Hope this helps
FastAttack 10-15-2003, 10:30 PM From what I can see you have plenty of space for a RAM AIR type of intake..
can you give me details as far as the fender wall does it have a whole going in it?
what kinda intake does it have right now stock?

The stock one is the standard 4.9l breather box on the front left hand side of the car (if facing it). Its a forced air box that comes in through the grille and behind the light. there is a whole to put an aftermarket in but i dont' know where to start

Sorry for the delayed answer.
Anyhow, if you can get me pics and specs of the hood I can most likely tell you the steps you need to take to make your own CAI or Forced induction kit,
most likely it will require you to take it to a muffler welder but it will all in all be a cheap solution!
Sean McDonald 11-19-2003, 12:48 AM I have a 94 STS with the 4.6 N* My intake is also in the drivers side and since there are no electronics I am going to try this weekend to rig up a short ram single bend intake from a Civic. Seems to be the right size...just need to check diameters.

take pictures of your install if possible..
I am very intrested on this :)
Sean McDonald 12-24-2003, 11:18 AM Well, I built my intake last night...very basic. Works quite nicely though. I used a small section of aluminum pipe with the crankcase vent nipple. Connected it to the throttle body via a rubber adapter and put the open element filter on the end. There is a somewhat throatier sound, not much yet....but it has been my experience that these will get louder as time goes on. As far as performance, I did achieve a definate increase, much more responsive and all around a bit quicker. I will post pics when I have time to take some. Merry Christmas!
